If your goal is B1, HK-dir recommends registering for the A2–B1 oral test. The B1–B2 test is intended for candidates who want to demonstrate skills up to B2.
Official format
The three tasks on the A2–B1 oral test
You normally take the test with another candidate. Two tasks are individual and one is a conversation.
The oral test usually lasts about 20–25 minutes. You may receive an extra question from the level above, and the result can be lower or higher than the level you were aiming for.

Assessment
What the assessor listens for
You must answer what the task asks in an understandable way. HK-dir lists four language criteria for the oral test:
- Fluency: keeping your answer moving and connecting your ideas
- Pronunciation: being understandable to the listener
- Vocabulary: having enough words to explain what you mean
- Grammar: using sentence structures that make your message clear
A practical way to practise
Train for the task you will actually receive
Do not try to memorise one perfect speech. Practise a repeatable way to build an answer:
- Answer the question directly before adding details
- Give one or two concrete examples from ordinary life
- Explain why you hold an opinion instead of only stating it
- In the conversation, respond to your partner and help the exchange continue
- Record your answers, time them and listen for places where the message becomes unclear
Good to know
The test measures speaking, not specialist knowledge
The topics concern familiar adult life, such as family, school and work. You are assessed on how you communicate, not on how much factual knowledge you have about the topic.
